New Years ideas

I'll be winging my way down to Manchester in less than a week for revision and Christmas with my family, most of which I'll spend tutoring them how to use the various electronics than they'll gift each other. During that period I'll no doubt meet up with some old friend for drinks, do a little karting, have our usual family Christmas day and then along will come New years. I'm dreading new years eve because I have no idea what to do, the past few year have been such a let down. When you head into town you end up spending 4 times as much for a night that just isnt any better than any other night of the year, if you stay local, well its more or less the same except you can't even do a tour of the pubs because half charge on the door, or have sold out of tickets and the rest are too full. Last year I stayed in, treated it like any other night but even that turned out to be a disapointment as I never got even close to the amount of self gratification I thought I might. Is there anything worthwhile to do in Manchester for new years?
